Dear Parents,
Welcome to a new school year! I am excited to get to know all of the 4th graders and start our learning journey. The students’ academic achievements are framed in the Gospel values emphasized in our school community. The students' spiritual growth is developed through the respectful learning atmosphere present in our classroom and the school.
Fourth grade is a transition year for the students. They are growing in responsibility and independence, and more will be expected of them. We will lead them into this new responsibility, guide them to be organized, and help them to be more self-sufficient. The students will rise to these expectations, and by the end of the year will be prepared to accept the challenges of fifth grade.
At Back to School Night, the list of curriculum goals was handed out. These goals follow the Diocesan Curriculum Guidelines, which also encompass the State of California Framework. The materials will be presented using different strategies to address the various learning styles of the children in the class. Development of study skills will also be emphasized to help the students be successful in their subjects.
As your children’s teacher, I hope to make 4th grade an interesting and engaging year. I will strive to make 4th grade a happy year, filled with new opportunities that will encourage a love of learning. Please contact me with any concerns or questions you have regarding your children. As their teacher, I am in a partnership with you and the entire school community to guide your children to receive a quality education based on Gospel values.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Johnson

4th GRADE BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to behave in a manner that shows respect towards adults and fellow students at St. Mary’s School. The Fourth Grade classroom rules are as follows:
1. Follow directions.
2. Raise your hand before speaking.
3. Listen when someone else is speaking.
4. Respect the property of others.
5. Work and play cooperatively with others.
6. Keep our classroom neat and clean.
HOMEWORK
In Fourth Grade, homework assignments should take the students 30-45 minutes Monday through Thursday nights. In addition, other short-term and long-range projects will be assigned periodically. A homework notebook will be filled in and brought home by your child each day. Please review this schedule nightly with your child.
Homework that is not completed on time will be considered late and will be given a lower score. A student not completing homework will be required to hand in the assignment the following day to receive partial credit. A note will be sent home on the day homework was due to inform parents of the missing assignment. Should the assignment not be handed in the following day, no credit will be given.
